Global law firm Goodwin has announced that Can Cui has joined the firm’s life sciences practice as a partner in San Francisco.
Cui serves as an external general counsel to life sciences companies in both the U.S. and China. His practice focuses on China-related life sciences transactions, including cross-border licensing, collaboration, and strategic partnerships, and M&A and joint ventures. He has a successful track record of representing both licensors and licensees in U.S.-China licensing transactions and regularly represents life sciences companies and investors in intellectual property due diligence and Chinese regulatory matters. As a former scientist, he has strong research experience in both immune-oncology and virology, and holds a doctorate in biological chemistry and molecular pharmacology from Harvard University.
“The U.S. and China are the two largest life sciences markets in the world, and Goodwin’s comprehensive global offering adds significant value to companies operating in both markets,” said Cui. “I’m thrilled to join the firm's talented, collaborative team to deliver exceptional service to clients.”
Prior to joining Goodwin, Cui was an associate in the IP and technology transactions groups at Morrison & Foerster, where he was a key member of the firm’s China life sciences practice. During his four-year residency in the firm’s Hong Kong office, he managed, in addition to cross-border licensing and investment transactions, patent dispute matters in China on behalf of MoFo’s U.S. clients, and gained extensive experience in IP dispute resolution in China. During his subsequent five-year residency in MoFo’s San Francisco office, he continued to represent clients in both China and the U.S. in their cross-border technology transactions and investments, and played a leading role in those transactions in the life sciences industry.
While working in MoFo’s Hong Kong office, Cui was an adjunct faculty member at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). During his three-year tenure at the CUHK Faculty of Law, he taught the Principles of Intellectual Property course, and established CUHK’s Chinese IP Law course.
Prior to and while attending law school, Cui worked as a U.S. patent agent in the Boston and New York offices of Ropes & Gray, where he was a member of the Fish & Neave IP Group.
At the same time, Steven Green has joined the firm’s life sciences practice as a partner in its Silicon Valley office. Green helps emerging life sciences, technology, and digital health companies on a full spectrum of business and legal issues throughout their corporate lifecycles. Mr. Green has extensive experience advising clients on new company formations, early-stage financings, employment and executive compensation matters, capital raisings, mergers and acquisitions, and initial public offerings. He also advises venture capital firms on structuring and executing investments into life sciences and technology companies.
