Japan, Thailand file more GI registrations
23 August 2023
While Japan has filed GI for Tajima and Kagoshima beef in Thailand, Thailand has successfully registered GI for Doi Chaang and Doi Tung coffee in Japan. The successful GI registrations for these items were recently announced by both countries.
According to Vuttikrai, the successful registrations seek to promote identity and cultural narratives that produce cash for nearby communities and assist increasing trading options for agricultural products. He said that Thailand presently ranks fourth in ASEAN and 24th globally in terms of exporting coffee. It is important to note that Thailand exported coffee to Japan for B36 million (US$1.03) in the previous year. Additionally, Doi Chaang and Doi Tung coffee are renowned for their distinct flavours and exceptional quality.
Other goods up for GI certification include Huay Mon pineapples in Japan, Pakpanang Tab Tim Siam pomelo, Phetchabun sweet tamarind and Thung Kula Rong-Hai hom mali rice in China.
In a related development, Commerce Minister Jurin Laksanawisit stated that the GI system has demonstrated to be a significant mechanism in adding value to over 189 local products nationwide over the past 20 years while presiding over the “GI 20/20 Mission: 20 Years of Thai GI Advancement” recently organized by the Intellectual Property Department. Over B51 billion (US$1.45 billion) in market value has been produced through GI goods.
